Your business identity with the ATO

ABN registration, done right the first time

The ABN itself is free. Getting the entitlement, structure and the registrations around it right is where mistakes cost money. We handle it as part of a complete, correct setup.

The short answer

An ABN (Australian Business Number) is the 11-digit number that identifies your business with the ATO and on every invoice. It's free to apply via the Australian Business Register, and practically essential: without one, clients may withhold tax from your payments at the top rate. Sole traders need an ABN; companies need an ABN and an ACN.

Why it matters

What your ABN unlocks (and what its absence costs)

Invoice without withholding

No ABN on your invoice? The payer may be required to withhold tax at the top marginal rate from what they pay you. An ABN keeps 100% of your invoice flowing to you.

GST registration & credits

You need an ABN before you can register for GST, charge it correctly and claim GST credits on your business purchases.

Business name & credibility

An ABN is required to register a business name, open business bank accounts and deal with suppliers as a real business.

Right entity, right ABN

The ABN belongs to an entity: you as a sole trader, or your company. Applying under the wrong entity creates tax problems that surface later.

Entitlement checked

Not everyone is entitled to an ABN: you must be carrying on (or starting) an enterprise. We confirm your situation so the application is approved and stays valid.

Everything registered together

ABN, TFN, GST and PAYG withholding lodged as one coherent setup, not as loose pieces you have to reconcile later.

How we do it

Three steps to a clean ABN setup

STEP 01

Structure & entitlement

We confirm whether the ABN should sit with you as a sole trader or with a company, and that you meet the entitlement rules.

STEP 02

Application lodged

ABN application submitted with the right details the first time, usually approved instantly or within days.

STEP 03

Add-ons that fit

GST if your turnover requires or benefits from it, PAYG withholding if you'll hire, business name if you'll trade under one.

Entrepreneur completing an online ABN registration form from a home office

Ten minutes, done right

One clean application, zero rework

Entitlement checked and details right the first time, so your ABN arrives fast and stays valid.

ABN FAQ

Common ABN questions

Is an ABN free?
Yes, applying via the Australian Business Register (abr.gov.au) is free. Beware of sites that charge just to submit the free form. The professional value is in the structure and registrations around it, not the form.
How long does an ABN take?
Most applications are approved instantly or within days. If the ATO needs to verify identity or entitlement, it can take weeks, one more reason to get the application right the first time.
Do I really need one?
If you carry on a business, in practice yes: without an ABN, payers may withhold tax from your invoices at the top rate, and you can't register for GST or claim credits.
ABN vs ACN: what's the difference?
The ACN is ASIC's 9-digit company identifier issued at incorporation; the ABN is the ATO's 11-digit business identifier for any entity. A company needs both (see what is an ACN); a sole trader only needs an ABN.
My ABN was cancelled. Can I get it back?
Usually yes. If it was cancelled for inactivity you can reapply or request reinstatement by showing you're carrying on a business. We handle reactivations regularly.
